David Silvester, a Councillor for Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, wrote to his local paper (The Henley Standard) which said the recent storms that had beset Britain were as a result of the country legalising gay marriage.
In the letter, which was published last week, he said: "Since the passage of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act, the nation has been beset by serious storms and floods.
"One recent one caused the worst flooding for 60 years. The Christmas floods were the worst in 127 years. Is this just 'global warming' or is there something more serious at work?"
He continued: "The scriptures make it abundantly clear that a Christian nation that abandons its faith and acts contrary to the Gospel (and in naked breach of a coronation oath) will be beset by natural disasters such as storms, disease, pestilence and war.
"I wrote to David Cameron in April 2012 to warn him that disasters would accompany the passage of his same-sex marriage bill.
"But he went ahead despite a 600,000-signature petition by concerned Christians and more than half of his own parliamentary party saying that he should not do so.
"It is his fault that large swathes of the nation have been afflicted by storms and floods."
Following his letter, UKIP issued a statement said Mr Silvester's views did not reflect the opinions of the party, but they also defended the right to have a personal "religious ideology".
Then on Sunday (19 January), Mr Silvester appeared spoke to the BBC, despite UKIP Leader Nigel Farage requesting he carry out no more media interviews.
When questioned by a BBC presenter, the Councillor said: "God wants all gay men to repent and be healed. I don't believe it's right to leave them as they are. That's not God's purpose."
Councillor Silvester joined UKIP almost one year ago after leaving the Conservative Party in protest at the legalisation of gay marriage.
