The research, which was commissioned by the organisers of educational trade show Bett, also found that one in 10 said their assistance on homework saved stress and temper tantrums from their children, while a quarter said they had to stop themselves from completing the work.
The study looked at 2,000 parents with children between the ages of five and 15.
Elsewhere, it was discovered that some 70% of parents said their children have no problem with having their homework completed for them, with 38% confessing that their children even walk away and leave the adults to complete the work. Other children were said to frequently get distracted by what was on the television.
It's not just the children that can throw a tantrum however, as one in 20 couples regularly argue over their child's homework, with disagreements being over which parent should help, the best way to approach the work and interfering too much.
While two-thirds said there have been times when they were unable to help because the work was too difficult, some 18% said they felt judged by teachers for the standard of their children's work.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesman for educational trade show Bett is quoted in The Telegraph as saying: "Most parents will get called upon to help with their children's homework at some point during their education.
"But these results show there is a fine line between helping your child understand their studies and completely taking over.
"If you are letting your child sit back and relax while you do their homework, the chances of it actually sinking in are very slim.
"It's probably best just to be there as a sounding board if your child gets stuck on something."
