According to the Daily Mail, 50-year-old Ann Duffy is said to have contacted Plymouth Register Office last year. During the phone call, she pretended to be her (now) sister-in-law and told officials she wished to cancel the wedding.
The court was told that Ms Duffy had made the call to the Register Office on 5 November 213 – just 20 days before her brother was to marry. Following the call, she is then alleged to have phoned her brother, saying: "You better put this on speakerphone. I have saved you on the divorce. I have cancelled your wedding.
"Would you like me to send you the confirmation email?"
Her brother's fiancée then contacted the police.
Mr Walden, who is prosecuting, said the relationship between Ms Duffy and her brother's fiancée had been strained as their was disagreement over the care of Duffy's mother.
"One offence doesn't really constitute a harassment charge. There were other incidents that had been reported to police which is why the charge was brought," he argued.
The court heard how Duffy had discussed the frosty relationship in an interview. It is understood Duffy's mother had moved in with the bride and groom-to-be. Duffy later claimed that she was trying to protect her brother from a marriage to someone she did not like and who she believed was trying to take her mother away. She added that she did not want to cause her brother distress – just her sister-in-law.
Roger Page, defending, said: "What we have here is somebody that has pleaded guilty to harassment without violence.
"The defendant still takes the view that her brother is not suited to his wife.
"In desperation to avoid her brother from making what she regarded as a disastrous move she cancelled the wedding."
The couple-to-be were able to rebook their wedding after contacting the Register Office and explaining what the accused had done.
Duffy is due to be sentenced on 11 February.
