The actor plays John Watson in the drama, while his wife Amanda Abbington also plays his on-screen wife Mary Mortsan.
Speaking to Access Hollywood, the British actor said it was a "wonderful experience" to share with his other half.
"I've done it a few times with Amanda before, but nothing as sustained as this. We're playing partners in the show. She's great."
He added that spending a lot of time together on the set helped the work day to pass quickly.
"I love it. It made the day go even quicker. It made it even more enjoyable. We have a natural kind of rhythm and chemistry together that I love. I really appreciate that part of my day. It made it easier," he revealed.
Freeman and Abbington have been in a relationship since 2007 and have two children together, Joe, aged seven, and five-year-old Grace.
