The couple, who have been together for since 2005, are said to have thought the time is right to have another child.
Pitt, 50, and 38-year-old Jolie currently have six children. They adopted Maddox, 12, Pax, 10, and nine-year-old Zahara, while they also have biological children Shiloh, seven, and five-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. However, according to British magazine Grazia, the pair are said to be keen to adopt again.
A source is quoted as saying: "Angelina and Brad have spent much of the festive period discussing extending their family. They've been open with the children about it and they are all excited at the prospect."
They continued: "They have always wanted Zahara to have a sibling who shares her African heritage. Ideally they'd like a little girl aged between two and three.
"There is likely to be a visit to Ethiopia in the next few months to check on the proceedings at the clinic. But they will visit orphanages at the same time. They hope to have everything in place to go ahead with the adoption around April."
The actress has previously spoke of the love her partner and children have given her in life.
Speaking to the US edition of Marie Claire magazine, she revealed: "Brad has expanded my life in ways I never imagined. We built a family. He is not just the love of my life, he is my family. I hold that very dear.
"I suppose what I've learned from Brad is to be able to have the kind of family whose happiness and well-being comes before your own."
The couple announced their engagement in 2012 but have yet to set a wedding date.
