Willerton, 21, and Essex grew close during their time on the reality television show and after they both left the jungle, the couple were said to have started a relationship. This appeared to be all-but-confirmed by the model who admitted that the pair had shared a kiss.
However, it has now been revealed that they decided they would be better as friends. In an interview with The Sun, Willerton explained media pressure was behind the split as they didn't want to be the "next Katie Price and Peter Andre".
She explained: "I want a real, normal relationship where everything happens naturally and you are just allowed to be.
"I didn't want to be the next Katie Price and Peter Andre. And I gradually realised that could never happen for us."
Discussing how their relationship developed after leaving the jungle, the model admitted: "Joe changed when we left the jungle. He was more of a man than a boy, and I was like 'wow'.
"We spent the rest of the time in Australia engulfed in each other. We kissed for the first time in his bedroom after the show wrap party and we spent the night together."
It was only when the pair returned to the UK, that their relationship came under strain.
"Back in London, everything started to fall apart," she said. "Before we left, it felt very boy-meets-girl, but reality hit and suddenly there was all this pressure on us.
"It felt like if we were going to be together, we had to be committed to the relationship, because we'd be presented to the world as the Joey and Amy show."
