Speaking to the Daily Star, the 57-year-old admitted that the separation from his wife, Sharon, placed great emotional strain on him, causing him to suffer a dip in form.
Last year, Adams fell to a shock defeat against teenager Jimmy Hendriks as he tried to deal with the problems in his personal life.
The world champion, who is also known as 'Wolfie', admitted: "It's the reason why my form dropped off. It took me by great surprise when my wife walked out on me.
"I didn't realise that there was anything wrong, but, at the end of the day, when you get down to the nuts and bolts, there was another bloke.
"So while the cat was away, the mouse was playing. It absolutely devastated me."
He continued: "At the time, I couldn't give a toss about playing darts. Personal issues progressed to such an extent that my form just dropped off and I hit rock bottom when I was beaten by Hendriks."
Adams' wife was often seen to supporting and cheering for her husband as he appeared at the world championships, so their separation came as a surprise to many of those close to them.
However, 'Wolfie' has said his close friends, plus support from his brother, sister and two sons have helped him move on from the separation.
He added: "Once you are at rock bottom, there is only one way to go – and that is back up the ladder. I would say I'm in a much better place now."
