Rumours that the couple were to marry surfaced last month when the former Destiny's Child singer was spotted wearing a diamond ring on her wedding finger, but this is the first time the news has been confirmed.
In an interview on The Queen Latifah Show on Monday, the 32-year-old singer said: "He put a ring on it" before admitting her fiancé had popped the question a "while" ago during an online discussion while Rowland was in Bulgaria.
She explained: "He asked me first on Skype, and I was like, 'We're so far away from each other.'
"I remember we were both just kinda like, honestly, just staring at each other. And he asked me, and it was just that simple to say yes. I was like, 'I got my best friend to ride through life with.' He really is my best friend."
The X Factor USA judge, who is notorious for keeping her private life out of the public eye, also confessed she has been engaged for a lot longer than has been reported in the press.
"It's been a while," she said. "We've kept it very, very low - for years, to be completely honest."
This will be Rowland's first marriage. She was previously engaged to American football player Roy Williams, but the couple separated in January 2005 just two months before their scheduled wedding was due to take place.
