The 54-year-old's girlfriend, who is pregnant with his son, was still married to her husband and Cowell's close friend Andre, when they became a couple.
Speaking to the Daily Mail Weekend magazine, the music mogul admitted he felt guilty over the way he behaved, but said the news that he was going to become a first-time father helped him to stop feeling sorry for himself.
He claimed: "I let down a friend and I feel bad about that, but the good thing is that I'm having a baby and I never thought I would.
"And it totally changed everything. It was like coming out of a fog; that's the only way I can describe it. I thought, 'Stop feeling sorry for yourself, you've got nothing to feel bad about'.
"It just makes you feel like you've got a responsibility. I definitely feel better. I thought I was going to freak out, but I didn't. It was only the circumstances that were problematic."
The father-to-be also revealed that his mother is excited for the new arrival, regardless of the details surrounding the couple. He added: "She was actually very cool about it, but it was fairly traumatic when it happened and I had to call her before the story broke in the press but she was very calm and understanding."
In July this year, a US newspaper revealed the millionaire was to become a parent for the first time with socialite Lauren Silverman. At the time, 36-year-old Ms Silverman was still married to her husband. The Silverman's, who have a seven-year-old son together, divorced following the revelation.
