Ferguson, 27, and the 20-year-old One Direction star, dated for four months in 2010 when they both appeared on The X Factor tour.
Opening up about their short-lived relationship to The Independent, Ferguson said she feels the relationship stalled her career.
She explained: "That was my first mistake. I was 23, he was 18. Of course, if it was a 23-year-old guy dating an 18-year-old girl, no one would have batted an eyelid, but this way around was a big deal, apparently.
"I didn't realise that. I was just a hippy, free-loving person, but that's not a good thing to be in this industry. You can't just follow your heart."
The mother-of-two also refused to discuss Malik's previous comments labelling their relationship a "mistake".
She replied: "I was so shocked by what he said! But I'm not going to retaliate.
"We don't talk any more. We're not in touch at all."
Malik is currently engaged to Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards. The pair confirmed their engagement in August after 18 months of dating.
