The study found that some 70% of women and 63% of men do not think it is right for married adults to have an affair or a one night stand.
This is an increase from 53% of women and 45% of men who disapproved in the 1990s.
Those behind the research say the rise is because people are becoming more respectful of their partners and are aware of the hurt they can cause if they were to stray from their relationship.
Dr Cath Mercer, from University College London, is quoted as saying: "When we are thinking about our real sex lives, our real relationships, we recognise the importance of being respectful.
"That's not necessarily the case of what we might see online or in films.
"When it comes down to real people – we recognise the importance of respect and trust and I think that's why we're seeing this trend.
"We're becoming more disapproving of casual sex.
"We all know people who have suffered the consequences of affairs and relationship breakdowns where others have got hurt.
"We don't want that for ourselves and we don't want it for our friends and family."
However, it was also revealed that the number of women who feel it is acceptable to have a one night stand has increased from 5% to 13% since the 1990s, while the amount of men who feel the same remains unchanged at a fifth.
