The study, which was conducted by Ergoflex, also found that 'hogging the duvet', 'dirty bedsheets' and 'snoring' are other turn-offs when sharing a bed at night.
Perhaps the most interesting result, was that 'excessive cuddling' topped the list as the biggest turn-off for a first-time bed partner with 41% of respondents complaining about it. This was followed by 36% of people saying about dirty sheets being the most horrifying thing to encounter in the bedroom of a new partner. Elsewhere, 33% mentioned snoring, 28% ere annoyed by duvet-hoggers, while 26% were unhappy about a partner breaking wind or burping in bed.
Of those who selected too much cuddling as a turn-off when sharing a bed, 61% were female, while the majority of those who found unwanted bodily functions a turn-off, 51% were male respondents.
On the other side of the coin, respondents were also asked to say what they felt where the best things a partner could do when sharing a bed for the first time.
The most popular answer was having clean sheets on the bed (40%), followed by breakfast in bed (35% ). A further 30% said they would like a new partner to give them plenty of personal space when they share a bed for the first time.
Commenting on the survey, Jed MacEwan of Ergoflex UK said: "Good sleep requires a few ingredients, not least a comfortable, quiet and disturbance-free bedroom environment, so it was no surprise to find that the most irritating new partner habits were the ones that disrupted sleep.
"Sleep deprivation as a result of a partner's night-time irritations it can often spell the beginning of the end for a relationship.
"We hope our bed-sharing etiquette guide will help couples avoid this fate, and encourage everyone to be a little more considerate when it comes to bedtime.
"After all, when you both sleep well you're far more likely to have a healthy and happy relationship."
