Gay Marriage Bill To Pass First Hurdle

Legislation which would introduce same-sex marriage in Scotland is expected to clear its first Parliamentary challenge later today.

It is widely thought that the Government's Marriage and Civil Partnership Bill will be backed in principle, as Ministers prepare to vote on the issue.

MSPs have said the new law is the right thing to do, but religious bodies, like the Church of Scotland and the Catholic Church, argue otherwise.

Under the Bill, it has been claimed that religious organisations would need to "opt in" to perform the ceremonies. For those who feel it goes against their faith to do so, they will be also be protected under the legislation, with the Government pledging that no one will be forced to hold gay marriage ceremonies in churches.

Currently, same-sex couples in Scotland are allowed to enter into civil partnerships. If the legislation is passed, it is thought the first ceremonies could take place by 2015.

MSPs are due to discuss and vote on the Marriage and Civil Partnership Bill from 5pm today.
