Hawaii Legalises Same-Sex Marriage

Hawaii is to become the latest state in America to legalise gay marriage after the Senate passed a bill.

According to reports, the Senate approved the legalisation of same-sex unions by 19 votes to 4.

Speaking afterwards, the state's Democratic Governor suggested he would sign the bill into law as soon as possible.

It is expected to come into effect on 2 December 2013.

US President Barack Obama welcomed the vote, which took place on Tuesday, saying: "I've always been proud to have been born in Hawaii, and today's vote makes me even prouder."

Earlier this month, Illinois senators passed a same-sex marriage bill, and it is expected to be signed into law on 20 November. Currently, same-sex marriages are legal in 14 US states, as well as the District of Columbia.
