According to The Express, in 2007, 36-year-old Vincent Condron disappeared after after being given a community order for burglary and shoplifting offences.
It was only when a police officer saw the image of Condron and his bride-to-be as part of a £13,000 'Win a Wedding' contest. The officer was able to trace Mr Condron to his new home where he was then arrested.
He was put on trial at Cardiff Crown Court and prosecutor Hoa Dieu said: "A warrant was put out for his [Condron] arrest in 2007 after he failed to show up to the probation service.
"The warrant was outstanding for six years until a police officer recognised him by chance after he entered a competition to win a wedding."
Following the community order in 2007, the accused went on the run to Ireland, where he received counselling and later met his bride-to-be, Rebecca. The court was told how Condron has "turned his life around" and defending, David Leathley, said: "At the time he was hopelessly addicted to heroin and that was the key to his offending. He knew he couldn’t beat it in Cardiff where he owed dealers money. He fled to Ireland for his own safety and sought the help he needed."
Condron admitted failing to comply with the order and was sentenced to four weeks in jail, but walked free from court because he had already spent two weeks awaiting his sentence.
It is understood the couple are no longer taking part in the competition, but are continuing with their wedding plans.
