Previously, it had been reported that the couple split after George was allegedly 'sexting' his former girlfriend; however in an interview with The Sun, the 25-year-old said that wasn't the reason.
He admitted that his "problem with drink" was the factor behind the couple's separation.
"Michelle had ended our relationship three months before anyone knew. I had a real problem with drinking too much and that was, without doubt, the downfall of our relationship.
"It made me a different person, even if I didn't think it at the time.
"I was drinking more to forget the fact I was with someone who wasn't making me that happy.
"Michelle is seen as Britain's Sweetheart nowadays, I understand it might have looked as if there was something to hide, [but] there was no betrayal in terms of cheating," he added. George also confirmed that his former fiancée had called off their engagement three months before their separation was made public.
The couple started dating in late 2010 before they announced their engagement in April 2011.
Keegan is now engaged to former TOWIE star Mark Wright, while George is said to be dating model Nina Agdal.
