Border Police Interrupt The Wrong Wedding

Border Police have stormed a wedding in Camden – only to discover the ceremony was genuine.

The Camden New Journal reported that the couple – a Chinese national in her 20s and an Italian man in his 30s – were exchanging vows at the Council's Registry Office when they were interrupted by staff from the Home Office Immigration Enforcement.

The couple, as well as the bridesmaids, were separated and interviewed before the mistake was realised.

It is understood the couple met while working for the Harrods department store in Knightsbridge, but their ceremony had been flagged by a registrar after the couple had trouble spelling each other's surnames. It has also been reported that the bride-to-be's visa was due to expire in six weeks.

Realising their mistake, officials left and the wedding was restarted.

A spokesman for the Home Office, is quoted by the publication as saying at the time: "It is either the best sham wedding I have ever seen or it is real."

Officials added that they are "duty bound" to investigate any suspicious ceremonies from registrars, but the couple involved answered questions about their relationship and life which matched up. They also had a restaurant booking after the ceremony with friends and a hotel room for the night.
