The 54-year-old has previously admitted his lack of experience when it comes to dealing with babies, but an insider has allegedly confirmed this to British magazine Grazia.
"Simon has signed up to an exclusive dad coaching school," the source is quoted as saying. "Simon is a lot older than most first-time fathers and children were never really on his radar.
"But he wants to do right by his son and Lauren, so he's doing everything he can to ensure he's prepared. He has been learning how to swaddle, soothe and burp.
"He even gets homework."
The classes, which are held in Los Angeles, are said to be specifically targeted at more mature fathers, and the Cowell attends lessons lasting two-and-a-half hours each week. It has also been said that the music mogul is trying to persuade his girlfriend to attend the classes with him, as the lessons also help couples to work together once their child arrives.
Earlier this year, a US publication revealed Cowell was to become a father for the first time with socialite Lauren Silverman. At the time, 36-year-old Ms Silverman was technically still married to her husband – Andrew Silverman – who was also a close friend of Cowell's.
The Silverman's, who have a seven-year-old son together, finalised their divorce in August.
It is understood that Cowell and Silverman are due to welcome their child together in February.
