The study, which was commissioned by VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, found that the best colour for women to wear when trying to attract a partner is red.
When it comes to colours women should avoid on a first date, yellow and brown topped the list. Yellow was found to put both sexes off a potential partner on a first date, while women also disliked a man who chose to wear something pink. Females also said they tend to find men most appealing when they are wearing the colour grey.
The survey looked at how clothing choices on a date can affect levels of attraction. Those behind the research wanted to discover which colour of clothing of clothing was most likely to attract men and women when searching for a partner, and how significant clothing colour can be when looking for love.
Of those who took part – 1,128 females and 1,232 males who were all in relationships – they were initially asked if they still remembered the outfit their partner wore the first time they met. Some 92% said they did. Those who did remember, were then asked what colour it was that stood out for them during that meeting, and what their partner had been wearing.
When asked if the colour had any impact on how much they were attracted to them, 69% of men and 64% of women said yes.
They were asked, "If your current partner had been wearing a colour that you didn't really like when you first saw them, do you think it would have put you off them?", and 38% of women and 27% of men said "yes".
Looking at specific colours, men voted yellow (39%) and brown (28%) as the colours most likely to put them off members of the opposite sex, while women said that a man wearing pink (38%) or yellow (31%) would put them off approaching a potential love interest.
George Charles from VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, said: "Whilst it may well be considered fickle to base the odds of a second date with someone on the colour they choose to wear upon an initial meeting, the fact is that we make our primary assessments of potential partners extremely quickly.
"It is human nature to want to find faults and imperfections within these individuals in order to protect ourselves from hurt later down the road.
"It therefore makes sense that before you really get to know someone, fashion sense, and in particular, clothing colour choice, is one of the first things the brain will notice and evaluate for later analysis of a rendezvous."
