Today, Wednesday 23rd October, will see Confused.com launch the world’s first in-pub clinic at the Prince George in Brighton. The clinic has been specially set up for parents seeking to bling up their child's christening - but on a shoestring.
The study reveals some fascinating findings concerning parents' ideal vision of their child’s christening. It appears the nation has a growing appetite for arranging more lavish christening celebrations, over organising a smaller family gathering after the church ceremony at their local.
While christenings were traditionally seen as a religious right of passage, now it seems the occasion is more about the bling. The research identified that over a quarter (26%) of parents are now spending at least £1,000 on average for a christening celebration.
Catering costs are the biggest spending factor for the event. Some 30% of Brits admitted they had spent more on feeding their guests than they had originally budgeted for. In fact, over a third (37%) of the nation had gone over their planned costs overall. Nearly a half (49%) of those surveyed revealed that their costs had spiralled by up to £500.
And when it comes to picking the godparents, suitable candidates for the traditional guardian’s role need to be earning more than £30,000 according to 20% of those polled.
Joby Russell, Head of Marketing at Confused.com commented: "Brits are known as a nation of party-loving people, and the christening ceremony is one event that seems to be getting bigger and more lavish than ever before. We wanted to offer some advice to parents embarking on their preparations, and help them budget for costs they may not even consider. "
