'Bomb Hoax' Groom Is Jailed

A groom who caused a fake bombscare at his own wedding – after he forgot to book the venue for his big day – has been jailed, the Liverpool Echo has reported.

Neil McArdle, 36, of Liverpool, realised his mistake the day before he was due to tie the knot with his fiancée Amy Williams.

The couple were supposed to marry at St George's Hall in the city in April, but when McArdle realised the venue had not been booked, Liverpool Crown Court was told how he had made a call from a phone box saying a bomb was going to go off.

On the morning of the wedding, McArdle was said to have left the couple's house and went to a phone box. Disguising his voice, he told a receptionist at the venue that a bomb had been planted.

He said: "This is not a hoax call.

"There's a bomb in St George's Hall and it will go off in 45 minutes."

The building was immediately evacuated and police and a bomb disposal unit were sent to the scene. With the scene closed, Ms Williams and her wedding party arrived at the hall believing the ceremony was still going ahead. However, when the hall was re-opened around an hour later, it was revealed that there was no booking for the name of McArdle and Williams.

An investigation was quickly launched and the groom-to-be was arrested and charged with making a bomb hoax. He admitted to police that he had made the faux alert in an effort to postpone the wedding and buy himself more time to arrange the venue.

Defending, Barrister Charles Lander said: "If it wasn't so serious the facts of this case have all the markings of a comedy."

However, he added that McArdle knew it was "no laughing matter".

Judge Wright told the accused it was an "extremely serious" case.

McArdle was given a 12-month jail sentence.

His fiancée is understood to have supported him throughout the trial and the couple are said to still be together.
