Number Of Single People In The UK Soars

Newly released figures show that the number of people choosing not to marry in the UK has soared by 3.6 million in just 10 years.

The figures, which are the final results from the 2011 census from across the UK, show that more than a third of the population – around 17.8 million people – now class themselves as single.

As a result, the number of singletons living in the UK has increased by a quarter, while the number of divorcees has jumped by a fifth to 4.5 million people.

Same-sex civil partnerships accounted for almost 113,000 people.

Elsewhere, the figures revealed that the proportion of people old enough to marry and who have chosen to do so, has fallen from 51% to less than 47%. Experts say this is due in part to mass immigration and a baby boom.

It is thought that more couples are now choosing to co-habit rather than marry in a traditional ceremony.

Harry Benson of the Marriage Foundation think-tank is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: "It's misleading to look at the population as a whole - the majority of families with children - five eighths of couples with children - are married."

"Although the number of divorces has gone down, over the last ten years, the rise in family breakdown is due to a very simple equation - the rise in family breakdown is due to the decline in marriage," he added.
