There have been a number of claims in recent weeks that Mr Cameron has regretted his decision due to the upset it caused among the government.
The claims are first understood to have emerged in a book about the Coalition Government, In It Together, by Matthew d'Ancona. He wrote that Cameron told one of his supporters: "If I'd known what it was going to be like, I wouldn't have done it."
On Sunday, the Prime Minister denied the claim in a BBC interview, stating: "I don't regret it and Britain is a more equal and fairer country for having done it."
However, he did admit: "I don't think I expected quite the furore that there was. It's clearly been very difficult for some people to take on and I completely understand and respect that, back that."
Today (3 October), further claims about the Minister's "regret" surfaced when the Daily Mail claimed that Cameron spoke about the new legislation with senior Tory activists at a private session at the party's Manchester conference.
One Tory association chairman is quoted by the paper as saying: "Cameron was repeatedly and often forcefully challenged over gay marriage.
"He said he still believed that gay marriage was right but regretted the way he had forced it through Parliament.
"He was effectively saying he wished he had left it well alone. We wish he had to."
A spokesman for Downing Street has since said: "The account of the meeting is totally incorrect. As the Prime Minister said at the weekend, he does not regret allowing equal civil marriage, and believes that Britain is a more equal and fairer country to having done it."
The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill became law in July.
It is thought the first gay marriages will be held as soon as summer 2014.
