The 21-year-old has been dating Eleanor Calder since 2011, and said that his partner is often intimidated by fame.
She has also been on the receiving end of abuse from some of the band's fans, which had led her to stay away from social media websites.
Speaking to The Sun, Tomlinson said: "Things really bother me when they upset my family or Eleanor. I think I'm quite thick-skinned but if you're going to do or say that, f**k you.
"It hasn't been easy at times. She gets pretty intimidated by it all. I mean, who wouldn't? She can't have Twitter or anything like that.
"At first, I was like, 'Just chill out a bit, it's fine' but now I understand where she's coming from.
"I can't expect her to deal with some of the stuff so easily. But with that said, I couldn't be happier with her."
