Recently, a US magazine claimed the couple were due to split in a "$300m divorce battle".
However, a source close to the couple is quoted by British magazine Grazia as saying: "It would be too damaging for the children and a strain on both of them emotionally and health wise."
Rumours of a split first emerged after the couple were recently spotted spending time apart, with Douglas said to be living in Manhattan, while 43-year-old Zeta-Jones is living in the family's New York State home with their two children.
A source added: "It's no secret to friends and family that they spend so much time apart. Michael prefers city life whereas Catherine feels New York doesn't give her space to breathe.
"They need to make more of an effort with their marriage. It's not enough to be seen together for public appearances – they have to do more behind the scenes."
It has been reported that 68-year-old Douglas visits his family at the weekends in between his busy work schedule.
The couple married in November 2000 after first meeting in August 1998 at a film festival in France. They started dating in March 1999 and were engaged in December of that year.
They have two children together, a son named Dylan Thomas and a daughter Carys Zeta Douglas.
