According to E! News, a source close to the actress said the couple decided to go their separate ways "a few months" ago.
Barton, 27, and Knapp began dating in last year after they met at the wedding of 'Revenge' actress Ashley Madekwe.
The insider claimed: "It was amicable. She is concentrating on her new projects and is in production on a new film."
Earlier this year, it was rumoured the couple were engaged after Barton was spotted wearing what appeared to be a ring at the Coachella Music Festival. The star's publicist later denied the claims, saying she was "definitely not engaged".
The actress previously spoke of her gratitude to Knapp as he supported her career and attended public events and appearances with her.
She explained: "He's great. I was like, 'You don't have to come to the store opening, you don't have to do anything.' But he said, 'No I'm coming to support you.'"
