More than 600 parents participated in the study, which was carried out by HuntOrDye.co.uk in collaboration with Babies.co.uk, and it was discovered that 46% named drugs as their top parenting fear for their children.
Another major concern for 18% of parents was sex, with many worried about unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases or an inappropriate choice of partner.
A further 7% were concerned that their offspring would come home with a tattoo, bright hair or piercings, while 4% were worried about their child and alcohol.
However, 22% of parents said they trusted their children to make their own decisions in life.
James Macfarlane, Managing Director of Babies.co.uk, said: "Our users are far less concerned about alcohol than they are about drugs. They are aware that drugs are increasingly prevalent in youth culture – and, more worryingly, that it is often easy for young people to get hold of them."
He added that "parents should not get complacent about alcohol, even if their fears about drinking are eclipsed by drugs".
Last year, government statistics revealed 2,600 youths under the age of 16 were admitted to hospital as a result of alcohol. This compares to 101 as a result of illegal drugs.
