The survey, which was carried out on more than 17,000 men and women on NBCNEWS.com, however, found that despite this point of view, 84% of men still pick up the bill on a majority of dates.
Furthermore, 58% of women admitted that men still pay for most of the expenses even after they have been dating for a while.
More than half of the omen surveyed said they did offer to pay for their share of bill, but more than a third admitted that it was an 'empty offer' as they hoped their partner would not accept it.
However, the researchers behind the study claim "the deep-rooted courtship ritual around who pays is changing".
Couples in their 20s are found to be more likely to be open to financial equality than other age groups, but the general feeling about sharing expenses was changing across all ages, incomes and levels of education.
Four in 10 couples were found to share the bills to some degree during their first month of dating, increasing to more than seven in 10 after six months.
Interestingly, three quarters of men admitted they felt guilty however if they accepted payments from their other half.
Dr David Frederick, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Chapman University, New York, who co-wrote the study, said: "Some gendered practices are more resistant to change than others; for example, the acceptance of women in the workplace versus holding onto traditional notions of chivalry."
The findings were presented in New York to the American Sociological Association's 108th Annual Meeting earlier this week.
