The figures, released by the Office for national Statistics, also revealed that the extra babies – combined with an increase in immigration – means the UK has grown faster than any other European country.
The report added that more than one in six people are now over the age of 65 in the UK.
The first estimate of the population for mid-2012 suggests there were 63.7million people in the UK in June last year, an increase of 0.7% (or 419,900) on 2011.
More than 80% (53.3million) lived in England, while 5.3million were in Scotland, 3.1million in Wales and 1.8million in Northern Ireland.
In the year to mid-2012, there were 813,200 births, the highest number since 1972.
There were also 558,800 deaths with the same period, meaning there were 254,400 more births than deaths. As a result, this difference accounted for 61% of the population increase, while there were also 165,600 more international migrants arriving than emigrants leaving.
The population of the UK is now the third largest in the European Union, coming in behind Germany and France.
On the increased number of births, the ONS said the surge is being driven by large numbers of women in their 20s and 30s who are becoming mothers along with an increase in the number of migrant families in the UK. It added that the number of non UK-born mothers is about 26%.
