The 53-year-old music mogul was attending a press conference for The X Factor USA with his fellow judges at the Fox panel at the Television Critics Association in Beverly Hills.
With the news hitting the headlines across the world since rumours started on Wednesday, it was not surprising to hear that many of the questions directed towards Cowell were not about his singing talent show. However, while he didn't directly answer any questions related to the baby news, he failed to deny reports of his impending fatherhood.
When asked about the reports, he claimed they were just "one of those things", and when pressed further, he joked saying: "I haven't read the newspapers. Am I missing something?"
He then turned serious and said that he would remain silent on the speculation in order to protect "a lot of people's feelings."
He explained: "There are a lot of things I will eventually clear up when the time is right. I really have to be sensitive here because there are a lot of people's feelings involved."
On Wednesday, a US newspaper claimed Cowell was to become a father for the first time with married New York socialite Lauren Silverman. The 36-year-old is the estranged wife of Cowell's close friend, Andrew.
It is understood Mr Silverman filed for divorce from his wife two weeks ago, citing adultery as the reason for the split, but there is no evidence to suggest that Cowell and Lauren's affair started before the Silverman's marriage began to fall apart.
In an official statement released by Ms Silverman, she said: "I am committed to sorting things out with Andrew as amicably as possible to ensure the well-being of our son. I would hope for some space and privacy in order to work through this."
In a similar statement, her husband said that his "top priority" was that of his son.
The couple have one child together, a seven-year-old son, Adam.
