It has been said that seven in 10 women will have their first picture with their baby taken within the first three hours of giving birth, while a further 40% of these will be taken straight after the birth.
During the first week of the new arrival, mums will have had an average 19 photos taken with their baby. However, the survey discovered that it will take 22% of new mums a month to feel comfortable in front of a camera with their new child.
When it comes to new fathers, they like to try and catch the important 'first moment', with 58% of men confessing that even though they knew their partner was uncomfortable having a photo taken, they would still be behind the camera.
As a result, a third of mums ask family members to refrain from taking pictures on their first few visits to see the baby, while more than half of new mums surveyed said that no images of their baby were to go onto social media websites without her permission first.
A fifth asked their family members not to share any pictures on social media, while the same amount said they were happy for people to share the pictures – as long as they were the first to post them.
Spokesperson for Nikon UK, Jeremy Gilbert, said: "Having a new baby is an important milestone in anyone's life but it can leave mums feeling tired and unconfident about their body.
"Not having time to prepare and people taking unflattering shots is top of the list of their annoyances when it comes to people taking photos of them with their first born.
"It's an exciting and important time to capture, but a bit of care and consideration goes a long way with mum – as does a good camera that will do mum and baby justice! These are the pictures that last a lifetime, so it's crucial to get right."
