The news follows a turbulent week for the couple when the former Oasis frontman was alleged to have fathered a love child.
Gallagher, 40, is said to be suing the New York Post after it ran a story claiming he fathered a child with celebrity journalist Liza Ghorbani following a one-night stand last year, and that he was now at the centre of an "Anonymous v Anonymous" child support battle.
Ms Appleton was said to be speculating over the identity of the mystery person behind the suit when she received a call from her husband about the case.
According to the Mail on Sunday, Appleton's mother Mary said: "That was the first Nicole heard of it. There was absolutely no indication it was coming.
"She's absolutely devastated. He's known about it all along and didn't tell her a thing, that's what is most upsetting to us.
"She found out when everyone else did. She knew nothing about the journalist, she had no inclination. Nicole is in bits. They haven't spoken since he called her and told her what had happened the day before it was in the papers."
The couple married in 2008 and have a 12-year-old son together.
Gallagher is also a father to Molly, 15, with Lisa Moorish, and a son, 13-year-old Lennon with his ex-wife Patsy Kensit.
The child support case is reportedly listed in Manhattan's Family Court, with the next hearing scheduled for Friday.
