The numbers, released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that stay-at-home mums has now fallen by almost 50,000 over the past year.
It is now thought only two million women are "looking after family and home", a drastic fall of almost one million since 1993.
However, the number of stay-at-home fathers has almost doubled over the last 20 years, from 111,000 to 209,000.
It is thought the sudden fall in stay-at-home mums is because they are under pressure to find work due to the ongoing recession and changes to taxes and benefits.
Elsewhere, official figures reveal that many men are now earning less than they did a decade ago after the figures are adjusted for inflation, therefore forcing their partners to increase the money coming into the home by working.
Lynne Burnham, from campaign group Mothers at Home Matter, is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: "Cuts are biting and families are under pressure.
"In the UK, we have a very family unfriendly taxation system, with couples paying a disproportionate amount of tax on their earnings. Some mothers have also lost their child benefit.
"The Government needs a wider package of measures to help all parents, including those providing care at home.
"Surveys also show that more childcare is not what many parents want and not what children need. Sadly the Government isn't listening."
