The 39-year-old made the comment in an interview with Closer magazine.
The singer and songwriter has been raising her four-year-old daughter Scarlet by herself after she split from her partner Thomas Starr last year. She also admitted she was worried about the effects her work has had on her role as a mum.
She explained: "I find [motherhood] difficult. I don't think you ever get right and it's just like a work in progress - especially because of the way my work is."
Mel, whose real name is Melanie Chisholm, is currently starring in the stage version of rock musical 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and said juggling both her work and parenthood is challenging.
"I just took Scarlet to Australia for the Jesus Christ Superstar tour because I didn't want to be without her. But the tour and juggling it all with Scarlet really took it out of me and I've been feeling run down," she added.
In 2000, the singer was diagnosed with depression and she believes it was a combination of overworking and not eating well which led to the diagnosis. Since becoming a mum, she said she has adopted a different approach to eating.
She explained: "When I fell pregnant, I made it my priority to eat healthily because I wanted to give her the nutrition that she needed. It was liberating to relax about my body."
