When on the lookout for a partner, many singletons will check for a wedding ring before making a move on someone.
A new study carried out by Match.com, however, has revealed that three quarters of Britons admit to looking for a wedding ring when they meet someone on a night out. A further 62% admit to doing so in the first 20 seconds, while four in 10 claim they look for a wedding band before they even speak to someone.
Women were found to be more likely to look for the signs a man is married, with 81% saying they would try to see if there was a ring, compared to 70% of men.
Other tactics used by single people in Britain include asking certain 'leading' questions to determine if the person they are speaking to really is single. The most popular questions involve asking about plans for the weekend, who they're out with, their living arrangements or even holiday plans.
The survey revealed that if it turns out the person is taken, 45% of people will end the conversation prematurely. Elsewhere, 37% of respondents said if they are having a difficult time deciding if someone is single, they will ask them.
Kate Taylor, resident relationship expert at Match.com, said: "Many of us tend to shy away from asking someone outright whether they are single or not.
"Looking for love online does a lot of the hard work for you, as you can discover someone's relationship status instantly."
