According to Digital Spy, Melissa Cavanagh and Paul Yeomans, who live on the ninth floor of a block of flats in Rowley Regis, West Midlands, welcomed their daughter in the building's lift after it broke down with them inside.
Ms Cavanagh went into labour on Friday (5 July) and called paramedics to her home. The medics decided not to take the mother-to-be down the numerous flights of stairs, instead choosing to take the elevator. However, the elevator broke down and after 20 minutes of being stuck inside, the group realised they would not be rescued before the baby was born.
Paramedic Nikki Wildman said: "During the delivery we could hear the fire service desperately trying to get to us and, after about 45 minutes of being trapped, the firefighters managed to prise open the doors and we were able to take Melissa, Paul and their new bouncing baby girl to hospital."
Emergency care assistant Nigel Goodman gave the new parents the idea to give their daughter a name inspired by the place she was brought in to the world.
He said: "When it was all over, I remember saying to Melissa and Paul that they should call her Ella, short for elevator - and they have!"
The baby girl has also been given the middle name Nicola in tribute to Ms Wildman who assisted with the birth.
