In an interview with Bella magazine, the 55-year-old also joked that it was her underwear that resulted in her first marriage ending.
French was married to comedian Lenny Henry for 25 years and have one daughter together.
Referring to her new partner, she admitted: "I did a little bit of excruciating dating where you have to wear interesting pants. I hadn't done that for years.
"He did see my pants. I'm not going to tell exactly all about that, but he was really taken aback, let's put it that way. It took a while for him to re-adjust."
"I'm in the big pants again. I'm in the Bridget Jones's."
However, when referring to Henry, she quipped: "Maybe I should've worn more interesting pants and I'd still be married to him."
French married Bignell in April this year after two years of dating.
The couple met through Dawn's mum, Roma, who founded charity Hamoaze House with Mark.
The comedian has previously said her second husband is "the only man who hasn't seen [her] on television."
