According to Star magazine, an insider claimed the couple were fighting too much and decided to go their separate ways.
The pair have worked alongside each other on television show Cougar Town for four years, but it is believed their on-set friendship developed into a romantic relationship over the last year after Cox's divorce from David Arquette. It has previously been said that they have been dating for six months.
Cox, 49, is thought to have confided in her friend, actress Isla Fisher, about the failed relationship.
The source is quoted as saying: "She told Isla that she and Brian were fighting way too much.
"There's no hard feelings, but she wasn't into the drama their relationship brought to the table."
Earlier this year, 43-year-old Van Holt spoke about the relationship to Us Weekly, stating: "Courteney's amazing; Courteney's phenomenal."
Cox first separated from her 'Scream' co-star Arquette in 2010. The couple have a nine-year-old daughter, Coco, together.
The actor has previously accused his ex-wife of having an "emotional affair" with her Cougar Town co-star following the breakdown of their marriage.
