Men are also more likely to fall in love at first sight, while women talk first and decide later.
Of those talking points, the most popular first date topic of conversation is travel, with 45% of men and 42% of women in agreement.
The study revealed that travel plays an important role in the quest for love, as one in three are more attracted to someone based on their travel experiences and stories. However, one in 10 are also prepared to lie about the places they have travelled in order to impress a date.
When falling in love, 25% of men said they were 'head over heels' in love at first sight, with a further 29% falling in love after just one date with their woman. Looking at their female counterparts, they were found to be more likely to judge a potential partner on their personality and interests rather than their looks, with only 18% saying they were infatuated after first laying eyes on their man verses one in three after a first date.
In terms of dating turn-offs, what goes on at that first date is a deciding factor between the sexes - and first date topics of conversation can be a minefield.
A confident one in 20 men have tried to impress a first date by boasting about their "sexual prowess", while a similar number of women have raised the hot issue marriage and children. Safer subjects named in the research by both sexes include work (39%), music (41%) and favourite films or TV programmes (39%). Almost a third of men admitted they had been put off someone because their travel adventures are lacking, boring or different to their own.
While half of us fall in love after the first date, for one in ten, it was love at first flight as the realisation only dawned when they took their first holiday together. This was confirmed in the study when 81% agreed that taking a first holiday together was a huge milestone in a relationship.
It also seems that holidays tell us more about a person than meeting the parents, or meeting their friends as just 2% and 5% highlighted these as the pivotal moments in a successful relationship.
