Number Of Cheating Wives Jumps By 40%

New research has suggested that more women than ever are engaging in affairs, according to the National Opinion Research Center's General Social Survey.

It is thought reasons behind the promiscuity include financial independence and the rise of social media.

The study found the percentage of American wives being unfaithful to their partner had increased by 40% in the last 20 years, to 14.7%.

In contrast, the number of men cheating on their spouse plateaued at 21%.

Yanyi Djamba, Director of the AUM Center for Demographic Research told Bloomberg: "Men are still more likely to cheat than women. But the gender gap is closing."

This gap, reported by a sociologist at Auburn University at Montgomery, is said to be as a result of financial independence in case of a divorce, and the rise of social media websites which allow women to sneak around.

According to the survey, which was been conducted for more than 40 years, found African Americans, executives and managers were the most likely to report extramarital affairs, and while one in four men tried to justify their adultery with the excuse of an "unhappy marriage", one in two women used the same rationalisation.

Pepper Schwartz, a University of Washington sociologist, said: "They [women] can afford the potential consequences of an affair, with higher incomes and more job prospects. They have more economic independence and may meet a better class of mate"

She added that the ease of online affairs and the prevalence of computer use among younger women may be responsible for a large share of the increase, writing, "Think Ashley Madison."

Ashley Madison is an online affair-matchmaking service which serves 3.5million users in 26 countries since 2002.

Noel Biderman, Chief Executive Officer of Toronto-based Avid Life Media Inc., which operated Ashley Madison, said: "There's been a cultural shift and female infidelity is very linked to cultural change."
