The study, which was commissioned by Hilton HHonors, to mark the launch of The Great Getaway discounts, revealed that some 60% of women are leaving their loved ones behind as they go on holiday.
The main reason for leaving their other half behind and preferring to spend time with their girlfriends, was due to being able to 'get away' from family life.
Other reasons are said to include couples not being able to get the same time off work, while others are unable to agree on the type of holiday they should choose.
One in five women also admitted to taking their child away without their partner, with a further 10% admitted to going away on their own in order to get away from the stresses of their everyday life.
City breaks were the most common 'partner free' holidays, followed by shopping or spa break holidays.
When it came to men, two thirds of respondents admitted to leaving their partner at home while they jetted off on a lad's holiday.
Their main reason for wanting to get away was so that they could experience a different type of holiday, with the most popular option being a sporting holiday. However, a further third admitted they had missed their wedding anniversary by going on holiday with their mates.
The top three partner-free holiday destinations were found to be Spain, France and Italy, while London, Barcelona and Amsterdam were the top three cities.
Carmelina Tangi, spokesman for Hilton HHonors, said: "Variety is the spice of life and trying new experiences, exploring cultures or indulging a hobby are all ways to unwind on holiday.
"Different trips suit different purposes, so whether you're looking for the luxury escape of a lifetime, family fun on a beach break, fine dining, culture, spas or shopping, it makes sense to share these experiences with different people in our lives."
