A new study, commissioned by dating website wouldliketomeet.me, found that talking with a mouth full of food, and not talking to a date at all, were also a definite no-no.
Across Britain, 1,000 adults were surveyed with 65% saying that slovenly behaviour at the dining table was the biggest turn-off when dating, while 79% said bad breath was the worst.
One in four women (23%) criticised men who do not hold the door open for them, while 58% of daters are put off by the lack of discussion on a date. A further 50% admitted they were not impressed when their date started talking about an ex-partner.
When it came to the end of the date, 41% of men said they are not happy about being expected to pay for a meal, while one in five women said they always expect the man to pay.
On dressing for the occasion, 50% of men said a jumpsuit would be the worst thing a woman could wear to a date, while 28% said a woman wearing too much make-up was also a passion killer.
The other side of the coin revealed 48% of women felt a shorts-and-t-shirt combination was the worst choice for a man to pull off, with 18% adamant that they would not date a man twice if he had a 'man bag'.
Eden Blackman, founder of wouldliketomeet.me said: "With daters contributing almost £3.4bn to the UK economy annually in their search for a partner, it's clear people mean business.
"As this survey shows, don't fall over at the first hurdle by forgetting the most basic of manners."
