Couples 'Paying The Price' For Their Big Day

A new study has found that couples are facing higher charges for wedding venue hire, photography and DJs than other events, due to businesses increasing their rates once they hear it is for a wedding.

According to the Daily Mail, one venue looked at by consumer watchdog Which? increased their fees four-fold when holding a wedding as opposed to a family party.

Researchers posed as engaged couples in order to get quotes from venues, photographers and DJs in Edinburgh, London and Manchester. They then spoke to the same businesses, but pretended to be booking a family reunion for the same day, with the same number of guests. The results revealed they were offered better deals when it was for a family reunion.

One photographer was able to reduce a fee to £320 for the reunion, but the researchers were told that £450 was the lowest possible price for the wedding.

Looking at the music for both parties, all four DJs were found to increase their prices for a wedding, with one Edinburgh-based DJ claiming the wedding would cost between £300 to £350 compared with £200 to £250 for the family party.

For wedding venues, only one offering a different price. It quoted £850 for room hire with a minimum of 120 guests, even though the Which? team asked to make a booking for 100. When the team later called, pretending to be holding a reunion for 100 people, they were immediately offered a £200 room without prompting.

A Which? spokesman said: "Our snapshot research reveals some businesses are cashing in on a couple's big day by hiking up prices.

"We advise people to shop around to find the best deal before signing any contract."
