The survey, which was carried out by Debenhams, found the average amount of money spent on gifts in 2012 was £16, but this has now fallen to £12.
Despite the value falling, the high-street company did find a 7% increase in the number of people actually buying Father's Day presents, with many children choosing to be more careful with how they spend their money.
The research also found that mother's still have more spent on them with Mother's Day gifts coming in at an average £21.
When it came to boys and girls, the former were more likely found to buy a Mother's Day present than a Father's Day present, with 27% admitting they bought their dad a present. This compares to 53% for a Mother's Day gift.
Women were slightly fairer when treating their parents, with 56% buying Father's Day gifts and 61% choosing a Mother's Day present.
The survey also found a trend with spending, with people in the North of England being three times more likely to buy a Father’s Day gift than the south. The average amount spent on a gift was also higher at £19, while Hull topped the list as having the biggest spenders.
Disa Blackburn, Head of Gift Buying at Debenhams, said: "It seems poor dads are getting a raw deal when it comes to Father’s Day gifts and the gap in spending is only get bigger.
"After years of dad duties, such as being a living, breathing cash point and a 24 hour taxi service it's time we make an effort at making our fathers feel special.
"Dads are notoriously hard to buy for and our research shows that this is often the reason why they are forgotten – mum’s on the other hand have a much more diverse range of gift options."
