Farah, 30, is father to stepdaughter Rihanna, 7, and twin girls Aisha and Amani, who were born just weeks after last year's Games.
Speaking about his win, he said: "It's really nice to get this award. My previous achievements have been mainly connected to my athletics but my family is very important to me, so to be recognised for being a good dad is just amazing.
"This really has topped off a monumental year for me."
Take That member and X Factor judge Gary Barlow came second in the vote by Premier Inn after winning the award in 2012. Upon hearing of Farah's win, he took to Twitter and joked: "Day ruined,taking up running now…"
Two-time winner Peter Andre finished third in the vote, with David Beckham and six-time Paralympic gold medalist David Weir coming in joint fourth.
Former Premiership footballer Fabrice Muabma finished in fifth, with new fathers Robbie Williams, Marvin Humes and David Walliams finishing in sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
Sportsmen Frank Lampard and Ben Foden rounded off the top ten.
