However, according to a new survey by unconventional dating site WhatsYourPrice.com, some men go that one step further, by telling white lies regarding their children.
The research found one in three fathers lie on their online dating profiles about having children, and the younger the men are, the more likely they are to lie.
2,500 of the site's male members took part in the survey, and a significant 51% of fathers under the age of 30 admitted to lying about having children, while 12% of fathers aged 50 and over told lies.
On the other hand, 3% of men claimed they were fathers – but didn't actually have children, while just 1% said they had more or less children than they really did.
Speaking to Mashable, WhatsYourPrice.com founder and CEO Brandon Wade said many men lie because of a fear of rejection by a potential date.
He added that older men tend to be more honest because "you become more mature".
"I think you're also more comfortable with the fact that you're a parent and you learn that people will accept you for that."
However he also warned that lying "is actually a sure way of losing a partner."
He explained: "Honesty is the most sexy thing when it comes to dating. With those who are honest, you're going to attract women who don't mind the fact that you are a parent or a father.
"It's sort of a strange oxymoron thing: these guys think that by lying they actually get better results, when in fact the opposite is true.
"A man who has a kid before is actually looked upon as perhaps more mature and more able to sustain a real, committed relationship."
