13 First Dates And £11k Before Singletons Find 'The One'

A new study has revealed that singletons in Britain will go on 13 first dates, 11 romantic dinners and seven 'disaster' dates before finally meeting 'the one'.

According to cashback site Quidco, which commissioned the survey, also discovered that the average adult will spend almost £11,000 on dating before they walk down the aisle.

The research looked at 2,000 married adults and typically found that the average person will spend almost £1,355 on first dates alone over a dating lifetime.

The first year of a relationship is the most expensive, due to regularly costly dates and numerous gifts to impress a partner, with an average of £3,629 being spent.

This will then fall to £2,760 in the second year of dating as couples settle into the relationship.

When a couple do decide to take the plunge and get engaged, the study revealed that the cost of dating, interestingly, increases following an engagement with the average fiancé spending £3,012 on dates between the engagement and big day.

That one special person is probably worth it though as the average man will date 13 different people before finding his soul mate. A woman was found to date 10 different people before discovering 'the one'.

The survey also found men will spend around £16 on gifts such as flowers or chocolates for each first date in the hope of wooing their new potential love, while an extravagant one in five even admitted to taking their date abroad in an attempt to impress them.

The holiday dates end up costing men £760 a time, but parting with massive amounts of money does not always guarantee a good date, with the results revealing that UK singletons will endure seven disaster dates during their dating lifetime. A quarter of respondents even claimed they've had a friend call or text them with a 'fake' emergency to give them an excuse to leave an awkward date.

Andy Oldham, Managing Director at Quidco said: "It seems the dating game is a costly one for us Brits wanting to impress in the first forays of a relationship.

"When you add up the amount you will spend before you finally marry 'the one', the cost can be staggering, so it is no wonder splitting the cost of courtship is becoming more common.

"And it seems the money we spend isn’t just on the date itself. Many use it as an opportunity to treat themselves to a new outfit, beauty treatment or haircut, not to mention the gift purchased to really impress their potential partner."
