Oil Tycoon Loses Divorce Ruling

A Supreme Court judge has ruled in favour of the estranged wife of a Nigerian oil tycoon.

According to the BBC, Yasmin Prest, who is from England, won the latest ruling in a case which could have implications for divorcing couples.

The result means that Michael Prest's wide can now appeal against an earlier ruling which said the businessman did not have to hand over property worth millions of pounds as part of their divorce.

Ms Prest said she was "delighted and relieved" by the judgement.

It is understood the disagreement surrounded ownership of Mr Prest's properties, some of which are owned by companies based offshore, but he argued he did not personally own them, but rather the company shareholders did.

At an earlier ruling in October, appeal judges said the move ordering Prest to transfer the properties was wrong, but his estranged wife then took her case to the Supreme Court.

A judge heard the couple had lived to a "very high standard", with Mr Prest said to be worth around £48m. However, his former partner said he could worth hundreds of millions.

The businessman was criticised for not being honest about the true extent of his finances during the legal proceedings, with an earlier judge describing his evidence as both "deceitful and shambolic".

The couple, who are both in their 50s, married in 1993 and spent most of their time in London.
