The study, which was commissioned by Nickelodeon UK, looked at 1,000 men and 1,000 women and focused on the differences in maturity between the genders.
Eight out of 10 women polled said they were convinced men remained immature well into their thirties and forties. Of those who said their partners 'never stop being childish', some of the reasons for their immaturity included breaking wind, burping, eating fast food in the early hours of the morning and playing video games.
Staying silent during arguments, not being able to cook simple meals and re-telling the same jokes and stories when with their male friends were also hailed as signs of immaturity, as were having a short attention span, trying to do wheelies on their bicycles and wearing cartoon pyjamas.
Interestingly, when asked, both men and women agreed that the latter reach proper maturity much earlier than guys, with 32 the average age. Men were almost twice as likely to describe themselves as immature than women, with one in four believing they are 'actively immature'.
Women were also found to be twice as likely as men to feel that they were the ‘grown up’ one in their current relationship, with 25% of women making all the important decisions in the relationship. The same percentage also wished their partner would talk about themselves and what they’re feeling more often.
Three in 10 women admitted to ending a relationship because they lost patience with their guy being too immature, while a massive 46% of women have had a relationship in which they felt they had to mother their partner a bit too much. In fact, on average, women have to tell their partner to 'act his age' more than once a month – an average of 14 times a year.
Immaturity does have its positive points as well though, with four in 10 claiming immaturity is important in a relationship because it ensures the partnership stays fun and keeps things fresh. A further one in three also feel a bit of immaturity helps when bonding with children.
The research was carried out ahead of new television show Wendell & Vinnie and Tim Patterson VP, Director of Programming at Nickelodeon UK, said: "As a man, especially one who works for a children’s channel, the question if men ever reach maturity is one I am well accustomed to.
"However as the characters Wendell and Vinnie show in our new programme, a difference in maturity between two people definitely makes for an amusing partnership."
