As a result, this led to 90% of men saying they were desperate for more practical parenting information to have been available whenever they became a father.
They confessed to feeling inexperienced and suffering a confidence crisis when their child was born. Compared to new mothers, with 62% saying they felt natural holding their baby from day one, only 19% of men polled could say the same.
The findings also revealed that 40% of dads are not left alone with their baby in the first week after the birth, but more are likely to cover the night time feed, which is when they begin to bond with their infant.
Meanwhile, 57% of all new parents admitted they were uncomfortable when letting family and friends hold their newborn.
The study, carried out by Persil Non-Bio and Comfort Pure, has led to the company teaming up with England rugby player Ben Cohen to create the Cuddle Mastery Guide. The 34-year-old is a father to twin girls and said: "As a father of two twin daughters, I know it can be intimidating when you first meet your little one.
"But spending that quality time with them learning how to cuddle and reading up beforehand really helps to increase your confidence."
Jean Robinson, a children's dermatology nurse and trustee for the British Skin Foundation, which has endorsed the initiative, added: "The quality of parent-baby relationships influences your baby's physical and mental development, so it's very important to get it right from the beginning.
"Babies who are given lots of cuddles and love and affection may find stress or anxiety easier to deal with as they grow up."
